Four-day-long ’Goa Carnival’ gets underway
One of the most eagerly awaited festivals in the country, the ‘Goa Carnival´ kick-started in Panaji with CM Digamber Kamat flagging off the float-parade in presence of Governor Dr SS Sidhu.
One of the most eagerly awaited festivals in the country, the ‘Goa Carnival´ kick-started on Saturday in this erstwhile Portuguese colony with Chief Minister Digamber Kamat flagging off the float-parade in presence of Governor Dr SS Sidhu.
The four-day-long festival is a time for floats, lively processions, strumming of guitars, dances and non-stop festivity.
The festivities are presided over by ‘King Momo´, who had given the message of merry-making, drinking and eating just before the austere 40 days of Lent.
The parade was led by ‘King Momo´ float, hosted by Goa Tourism Development Corporation . The parade comprising 50 floats passed by picturesque Dayanand Bandodkar Marg on the banks of Mandovi river.
“It’s people’s carnival and we have received more than expected response for the parade,” Tourism Minister Fransisco Pacheco told PTI.
GTDC Chairman Shyam Satardekar, vice-chairman Lyndon Monteiro and Panaji Mayor Tony Rodrigues were among others present on the occasion.
The float parade in Panaji was organised by GTDC and Corporation of City of Panaji.
Similar parades would also be organised in Margao, Mapusa and Vasco.
