Anjana Talwar, general secretary of the trust, said it was a matter of great pride for the trust that foreigners had adopted the children through a recognised agency. “The adoption was finalised two years ago after interested families contacted the agency on the internet,” she added.

The adoption was conducted after receiving a no-objection certificate from the Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA).

The children had been learning French from a local institute for the past two years, while their new parents used to monitor their progress through social networking website Skype.

“The trust ensured that these children received education and training to prepare them for life in a foreign country,” Talwar added.

“The single parent who adopted two sisters visited Nari Niketan for a week. She interacted with the girls and acquainted herself with their habits. The two couples came two days ago. They distributed gifts and took the children along for a movie,” Talwar said.

Talking to HT, trustee Seema Chopra said the coaching would help the children acclimatise themselves to the new environment. “It was the parents’ requirement to make the children learn French till the adoption process was completed,” she said.

Col Sukhpal Singh (retd), chief executive officer (CEO) of the trust, said, “After getting the NOC from the CARA, we pursue the case in the guardian court. When the court allows the adoption, we forward the case to the municipal commissioner, Jalandhar, for registration and deed process. We then submit a request to the municipal corporation for issuance of birth certificates so that we can apply for passports and visas. The desired parents take the children after the completion of the entire legal process.”

The trust was set up in 1955 by the parents of former prime minister late Inder Kumar Gujral. It is being managed by its president, Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Gujral (the former PM’s son), and the trustees. The trust has 47 children, including an eight-day-old girl who was brought here on Tuesday after being found abandoned in the cradle of the Red Cross office, Amritsar.
