Gilchrist had doubts about his captaincy

Adam Gilchrist may have led Australia to their first Test series win on Indian soil in 35 years but the stand-in captain had doubts about his ability to achieve the historic feat.

Gilchrist said the responsibility of taking up the captaincy in addition to his wicketkeeping and batting jobs was a huge challenge and the historic achievement was possible only because he got the support from all his teammates.

"I was fortunate to lead the team. I had doubts about my ability to take the responsibility but got good support from my wife and the team" Gilchrist said.

"Hopefully, Ricky (Ponting) will be playing the next Test and I will be more than happy to give it (captaincy) back to him".

Gilchrist admitted that the Indians have "underperformed" in the series so far but took credit for not allowing the hosts to strike form at any point by maintaining constant pressure.

"I think they (India) have obviously underperformed to their potential. We know that they are an amazing team and they have proven that a lot over the years. But they were down on their form but I will also like to think that we can take some credit for not allowing them to get into form," Gilchrist told NDTV's 'India This Week' programme last night.
