Yelavarthi Siva Kumar, the 15-year-old labourer, who stood first in Guntur district in the Secondary School Certificate exams, can now begin the next leg of his journey to becoming a chartered accountant.
After his story had come out in HT on Friday, as many as 31 people called inspector of factories MV Shiv Kumar Reddy, who rescued the boy from a ginning mill and helped him get back to school.
He said, “Most of the callers are from the Delhi-Gurgaon-Noida region. As many 24 callers offered to send money right away.” What’s more, a lady teacher and her family offered to help the boy till he completed his education.
Another offered to send money every month till he finishes college.
Guntur district collector Jayesh Ranjan said, “We have got him free admission and a fee waiver for five years. We will see what help we can give him under the Cheyuthu (helping hand) Scheme for the poor.”
But since neither Yelavarthi nor any of his family members has a bank account, Reddy said, “We are opening a joint account in the name of the boy and his mother.” Yelavarthi, however, does not know that so much has happened in one day.
Since Reddy is away in Hyderabad there’s no way of informing the boy.
