A retired Air Vice Marshal, a highly decorated IAF helicopter pilot who won several gallantry awards, on Wednesday committed suicide by allegedly shooting himself at his home in Chandigarh.
Police suspect that "depression" may have led 69-year-old Air Vice Marshal Manjit Singh Dhillon(retd) to end his life.
Dhillon shot himself through the chin with his .12 bore gun at his Sector 35-C residence this morning, Station House Officer (SHO) Anokh Singh told PTI.
He said Dhillon's wife Harjit Kaur was at the house when he took the extreme step.
"Though Dhillon went for his morning walks daily today he did not venture out. From the crime spot, what we could gather is that Dhillon had sat on a stool and pointed his gun just below his chin and shot himself," Anokh said.
The bullet pierced through the chin and remained embedded in his skull and he died on the spot," he said.
Anokh said a case of suicide had been registered and his son and daughter who live in Delhi had been informed. No suicide note had been found, he added.
"From the statements given by Dhillon's wife and the information we could gather from his neighbourhood, it appears he was suffering from depression for sometime. His wife told us that he had been feeling lonely because the couple's children were staying away," he said.
