As of March 24, 2006, property tax collections stood at Rs 36,37,25,052 as against Rs 34,45,60,495 for 2004-05, an increase of almost Rs 2 crore.

Collections amounting to Rs 39.78 lakh were netted by departmental officials on Saturday with the largest chunk coming from Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) which shelled out Rs 7.5 lakh in outstanding dues.

“As the deadline for rebates approaches, the collections will rise. Over the next week we hope to raise Rs 7 crore, taking total collections to Rs 45 crore”, declared Revenue Officer Ajit Shrivastava.

“Nearly a crore of rupees is owed in outstanding xes by GSITS (Rs 64 lakh) and BSNL (Rs 22 lakh) alone. Both have already expressed their willingness to clear the dues and we expect to receive the money within the next couple of days”, he added.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Vinod Sharma appealed to residents to contribute to the City’s development by paying their taxes regularly and honestly.

Meeting on cable charges put off
THE SCHEDULED meeting between cable operators and Municipal Commissioner Vinod Sharma to be held today was postponed owing to ‘unavoidable reasons’.

No fresh date has, however, been announced. The meeting was called in the wake of the recent amendment to the MP Entertainment Tax and Advertisement Tax (Amendment) Bill 2006, doubling per connection tax levied on cable operators from Rs 10 to Rs 20. There exist an estimated 2 lakh cable-connected households in the City. However, the cable operators pay the IMC only a fourth of these.
