Sharma says she is not bothered by reports that stereotype her, adding, “I will not try to break an image that is working for me. I give myself credit to be able to get out of my comfort zone. I am not a Punjabi.

“I have lived in South India all my life and had a southern accent. I have changed my diction and have played these characters with such conviction that people think I am Punjabi.”

Sharma insists that each of her three characters so far is different from the other. She says, “In Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008), I played Tani who was a very meek character, whereas in Badmaash Company, I played part of a smuggling gang.

“In Band Baaja Baarat (2010), I was seen as a vivacious, enterprising girl. You can be a Bengali living in four different parts of the world but each one is distinctly different.”

Solution seeker
Sharma plays Southall-bred NRI, Simran, in Nikhil Advani’s forthcoming father-son conflict, Patiala House.

When asked about the significance of her role in the film, given that it revolves around the frustration of a son who gives up on his dream of fulfilling his father’s wishes, she says, “Simran, who is the nosy neighbour, helps resolve the family’s issues. Before she enters the scene, things are very mundane and slow-paced. She stirs up the household, brings change, happiness and excitement by inspiring Akshay Kumar’s character to follow his dreams.”

Upbeat about working with Kumar, Sharma says, “Despite having been in the industry for so long Akshay is never late nor does he go back to his vanity van after his shot is done. He is completely involved. I learnt a lot from him.”
