ICC ranking: India fail to grab 2nd spot
The humiliating 212-run loss in Mumbai put paid to India's chances of regaining the number two spot in Test rankings.
The humiliating 212-run defeat in the Mumbai Test put paid to India's chances of regaining the number two spot in the LG ICC Test rankings behind Australia.
A series victory would have taken Rahul Dravid's team above England, with a win in Mumbai taking their tally to 115 points and a draw to 114.
The series-leveling victory, England's first on Indian soil in 21 years, kept England as the nearest challengers to Ricky Ponting's world champion team with 113 points, although the difference between the Ashes rivals remains a healthy 16 points.
India find themselves third on the table with 111 points.
India did hold second spot for just over a month from mid-December, thanks to a combination of their 2-0 series win over Sri Lanka and the England's reversal in Pakistan by the same margin.
But India's 0-1 series defeat in Pakistan meant that they lost the second spot to Michael Vaughan's side and today's defeat meant that they stay in third position for the time being.
India would look to progress in the rankings when they tour the West Indies for a four-Test series starting in June while England face Sri Lanka in a three-match series at home in the summer.
