Dr Prasad mentioned that the universities and other institutions have been urged to highlight the IGNOU courses in their prospectus for the general information of students. Also counselling is to be provided at the colleges and IGNOU study centres (49 across entire state) for this purpose. Dr Prasad claimed that IGNOU courses are available to make students better suited for employment in at least 40 fields.

Also, the department has directed compulsory additional courses (IGNOU-run courses) for the staff with a view to raising the competence level of the teaching and non-teaching staff.

The courses include compulsory Certificate in Environment Studies for all college teachers, PG Diploma in higher education (suggested, not compulsory) for the newly appointed teachers to facilitate their career advancement and compulsory Certificate in Laboratory Techniques course for the laboratory technicians of the colleges.

IGNOU Regional Director Dr K S Tiwari, present on the occasion, said the initiative of the MP Government and the IGNOU was aimed at making

education more meaningful and employment oriented. He made mention of courses in field of agriculture and food processing fields, horticulture, grains, oil seeds, fish products and other such areas on the priority list of the Central Government.

He said that the Central Government is talking of investing Rs 1 lakh crore in these fields and a huge lot of trained technical manpower would be needed. The students can pursue these courses simultaneously with the normal higher studies to grab this huge employment opportunity.

Dr Prasad added that since the IGNOU courses are of distance format, the students need not worry about regular classes, compulsory attendance, exam schedules and so on.
