In Andhra, families grapple with grief
“He had a premonition that he would fall prey to Maoists bullets sooner or later and wanted to quit the CRPF job as early as possible. But that was not to be,” said Sandhyarani (21) after receiving news that her husband Krishna Rao was among the 26 jawans killed by Maoists in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday.
“He used to tell me that they were deployed as part of Green Hunt programme and could get killed by Maoists landmine anytime. He wanted to come back home and do something on his own,” she said.
Krishna Rao (26) hailed from a poor family in the backward Kottapeta area in Srikakulam and had joined the CRPF in 2007. For the past one year he was deployed in Chhattisgarh.
“My son is no class enemy that the Maoists claim to be fighting. He toiled hard against adversities to complete his B.Sc degree. Still he could not get a job and joined the CRPF as a last resort to support his family,” father Kantha Rao said.
“I knew something was wrong when he did not call after the recent attack. He used to call me up each time after a Maoist attack... We could not get any information for the whole day. Late night we were informed that he was dead,” he said.
The second victim from AP S. Ramarao was also from the same district. Ramarao (46) had completed 20 years of service in CRPF and was planning to take early retirement to construct a house at Jatyada village. He is survived by wife and two children.
The bodies of the two jawans was brought to Visakhapatnam by a special flight and will be taken to their native places later on Wednesday night.
