India and South Africa discussed issues of bilateral, regional and international interest at a high level meeting

India and South Africa discussed issues of bilateral, regional and international interest at a high level meeting held in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma, who is on a visit to Rio de Janeiro for the third IBSA Ministerial Commission meeting, met his South African counterpart Aziz Pahad and discussed the issues.

Sharma also met Essop Pahad, Minister in the Presidency to discuss the programme for celebration of the centenary of launch of Satyagraha by Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa, an official release said.

At a reception hosted by the High Commissioner of India to South Africa in honour of the visiting Minister, he met a large number of local dignitaries including leaders from Indian origin community and Indian businessmen.

In an extraordinary gesture, President Mbeki invited Sharma to have lunch with him, taking time off from a session of the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress for the meeting, the release added.
