Thirty-six years after Canada slapped sanctions on India for testing an atomic device, the two were to sign a civil nuclear agreement on Sunday night, paving the way for uranium supply and cooperation in research, development and radiation safety.
A research partnership to improve the pressurised heavy-water reactors used by both countries is also being planned, sources said on Sunday.
The agreement will be inked by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his counterpart Stephen Harper for a "substantive" bilateral engagement.
"This is an opportunity for the two countries to sell heavy-water technology to third-party countries," the sources said, adding that India would seek to market the technology to Jordan, Turkey and Thailand.
The sources said the deal was driven by climate change concerns, India’s voracious appetite for power and energy security issues.
Canada, the world's largest uranium producer, is the eighth nation to reach a civil nuclear deal with India since the Nuclear Suppliers' Group lifted a 34-year ban on India in 2008. The other countries are the US, France, Russia, Kazakhstan, Argentina and Namibia.
