India gets first green building comes up in Kanpur
NR Narayana Murthy inaugurates the first 'Green Building' of the country which will house the CESE, reports GP Varma.
It was our duty to give a "rosy world" to the next generation and the young engineers of IIT-K had the potential to shoulder this responsibility, NR Narayana Murthy, chairman of the Board of Directors of the Indian Institute of Technology (Kanpur) and chief mentor of Infosys Technologies, said.
Murthy also inaugurated on Tuesday the first 'Green Building' of the country, where the Centre for Environmental Science and Engineering(CESE) institute would be housed.
Narayana Murthy called upon the young engineers to share knowledge with the common man and to try and spread happiness by solving their problems. He said technological advancement was meaningless till it benefited people at large and exhorted students to put IIT-K on the list of top 10 institutions of the world.
He said that quota and licensing system in higher technical education should be abolished and more funds should be allocated to educational institutions. He cited China's example, where they gave priority to higher education and allocated Rs 600 crore to Rs 1,200 crore to universities.
"I extend financial assistance anonymously and on principle, I cannot announce what I have in mind for IIT-K," he said. Murthy also advised the students to "shun apathy" and take part in public life. Director IIT-K Dr Sanjay G Dhande said the next 50 years would shape the destiny of the people.
Noted journalist and Rajya Sabha member Arun Shourie described Narayana Murthy as a "living national treasure" and said there were only six Indians, including Murthy, who changed the perception of the world about India, all through their hard work and benevolent nature. He advised the students to follow their example. Shourie said excellence in the country should be protected and developed as it was under attack.
