Indian delegation to take part in Islamabad Pugwash Conference

In an effort to defuse the tension between New Delhi and Islamabad post Mumbai terror attacks, a ten-member delegation of Indian intellectuals, diplomats and political leaders is set to attend the two-day-long Pugwash Conference to be held in Pakistan, sources said.

Led by former vice-chancellor of Jammu University Amitabh Mattoo, the delegation will leave for Islamabad on March 4 to take part in the conference being held by Pugwash, the Nobel peace prize winner international disarmament institution.

In addition to taking part in the event, set to begin on March 5, the delegation is also expected to meet President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani, Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Pervez Qayani and other prominent leaders of Pakistan, Mattoo, who is an executive member of Pugwash, said on Tuesday.

In the past, Pugwash has played significant role in breaking the ice between India and Pakistan by organising close-door meetings, he said.

Recently, the NGO had arranged a meeting between the officials of US President Barack Obama’s new administration and senior leaders of Iran to discuss Tehran’s nuclear programme, he added.
