The Lok Sabha elections are just a month away but the BJP is still struggling to finalise probables for the seven seats in Delhi because of the intense infighting within the party.

To quell dissidence, senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari was on Tuesday forced to hold one-to-one interactions with party members to discuss probable names.

Just 28 days are left for campaigning to end and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has already declared all seven candidates. The Congress has conducted primaries and zeroed in on certain names.

Lok Sabha elections will be held on April 10.

According to senior BJP leaders, all 70 candidates who contested the assembly elections, the state office-bearers of the seven parliamentary constituencies, leader of the house, Mayor and the standing committee chairman lined up at Gadkari’s residence.

One major issue that has become a bone of contention is whether MLAs should be allowed to contest or not. Senior BJP leaders said a number of MLAs wanted to contest the LS elections as they had won the assembly polls by a huge margin.

“The stakes are very high for the BJP as it had lost all the seven seats last time. One section felt young faces should be promoted to counter the AAP,” said a senior BJP leader.

“The national leadership is likely to announce the names of the candidates by March 13 now as the Central Election Committee is scheduled to meet then. There was resentment over some names. Gadkariji decided to give everyone a patient hearing,” said a senior leader present at the meeting.

Everybody was called separately. “It was a Herculean task. The meeting started around 6 pm and continued till late in the night,” said a leader.
