Lawyers in Srinagar on Wednesday threatened agitation against the detention of High Court Bar Association chief Mian Qayoom under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) for two years.
Qayoom, according to family members, was arrested in a nocturnal raid by the police around 1:20 am. Official sources said Qayoom will be shifted to the high-security Hiranagar jail in Jammu, 300 km south of Srinagar.
The J&K High Court Bar Association has decided to boycott the courts from Thursday against the arrest and the killings of 15 civilians.
"We condemn the police raid. The arrest is aimed at deterring and stopping the lawyers and the intellectuals of Kashmir from taking part in the ongoing Kashmir struggle," said HCBA general secretary G.N. Shaheen in a statement.
He said the HCBA was mulling to launch a movement on the pattern of Pakistani lawyer's against the former president Pervez Mushrraf's regime.
On Tuesday, the HCBA convened an emergency meeting and asked rural population to support urban protester by sharing essentials like milk and vegetables.
It also appealed international aid agencies "to come to the rescue of Kashmiris facing shortage of essential life saving drugs and baby food items".
The government, however, refuses there was any shortage of goods or essentials in the state.
