A seasoned politician of Madhya Pradesh, Jamuna Devi is seen as a rebel within the Congress, who has her own views on vital issues. Despite mending bridges with Chief Minister Digvijay Singh she has often embarassed him by raising issues relating to women empowerment and attrocities against tribals.
Called 'buaji' with affection, Jamuna Devi was born in Sardarpur of Dhar district.
She was first elected as MLA in Madhya Bharat in 1952 and was Member of the Lower House from 1962-67 and the Upper House from 1978-80. In 1985 she was re-elected to Parliament and became Minister of State for Scheduled Caste and Tribal Development in 1989.
Jamuna Devi had also been a member of Parliamentary Advisory Committee of Social Welfare and Tribal Welfare Department from 1963 to 1967.
Besides being an active member of Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee from 1964 to 1973. She had also served HUDCO as its Director in 1980-81.
Jamuna Devi was inducted into Digvijay Singh Cabinet on December 14, 1993 and was given the key portfolio of Women and Child Development Department. After her election to the 11th MP Assembly she was elevated to the rank of Deputy Chief and continued to hold the same portfolio.
