Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa today urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discourage Sri Lankan VIPs from visiting Tamil Nadu given the peoples' sentiments. HT reports.

Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discourage Sri Lankan VIPs from visiting Tamil Nadu given the peoples' sentiments.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, Jayalalithaa said that the Union government ought to give permission to visits by Sri Lankan VIPs and dignitaries only after consulting the Tamil Nadu government that has to provide them security.

The chief minister recalled few instances wherein Sri Lankan VIPs visited Tamil Nadu without prior intimation and said it becomes difficult to take precautionary security measures. Perception of Tamil Nadu locals is that the Sri Lankan government had failed to protect in that country.

There was an attempt to attack Thirukumaran Nadesan, brother-in-law of the Lankan President, during his visit to Rameswaram on 9.1.2012 and 10.1.2012.

“As there was no information to this Government either from the Sri Lankan government or from the Government of India, no precautionary security measures could be taken,” Jayalalithaa said urging the Prime Minister to appreciate the difficulties faced by the Tamil Nadu government when Sri Lankan officials come visiting the state without prior intimation.

This issue has already been raised with the union government, Jayalalithaa said.

“It would be appropriate that the Government of Tamil Nadu is given prior intimation about the visits of Sri Lankan dignitaries and it would also be appreciated if the Government of India discourages such frequent visits to Tamil Nadu and allows such visits only after consulting the Government of Tamil Nadu in future,” Jayalalithaa said.
