THE STRIKE called by the junior residents (JR) has brought problems for third-year residents (JRIII). They have to complete the ?break-in-service? period before exams. Their exams start on April 1 and there are no leaves left for them to give extra time.

The doctors had four days of break in their service period from January 16 to 19, before they joined service on January 20, after the State Government imposed Essential Services Maintenance Act.

The KGMU administration says the break in service period has to be completed before the exams and it’ll be tough considering that exams are round the corner.

The JR I & II can do it easily as they have several causal and earned leaves to work but the problem is for JR-III. It is being said that the break in service period of past two strikes would also be included but the registrar cleared it would only be of the current strike period.

However, the break in service period is now going to stay with the junior residents for their entire life, as it would be mentioned in their service records. The break period would be mentioned on their certificate along with dates they covered this period.

Efforts are also on to start studies on both the KGMU and KGDU and the final year is being given priority.

“We do not want to victimise students and final year students suffer the maximum loss if their studies are paralysed for long. Thus, it has been decided to allot them hostels on January 27 and also start their classes,” said Vice-Chancellor Mahandra Bhandari.
