The KMC had launched a massive anti-encroachment drive in January this year. In the drive thousands of illegal structures were razed down. During the drive, land worth several crores was freed from illegal occupiers.

But barely two months have passed and the KMC received several complaints about encroachments cropping up again in all prominent city markets. Similar complaints have been received by the DM and commissioner’s office.

However, during the last drive, divisional commissioner Anita Bhatnagar Jain had clearly stated that the local police would be responsible if encroachments resurfaced after the drive.

Taking serious note of the issue, the KMC has decided to launch an anti-encroachment drive from March 31 at all major markets and commercial establishments.

The areas likely to be targeted are Naveen Market, PPN Market, Swaroop Nagar, Birhana Road, Nayaganj, P Road, Gumti, Fazalganj and Govind Nagar and other commercial areas.

However, the Kanpur Municipal Corporation  had already made clear its intentions by carrying out a surprise anti-encroachment drive on Tuesday. During the drive, which was launched from the Coca Cola crossing, four truckloads of goods were confiscated by the KMC squad.

Encroachments on pavements were removed and fine was also levied on a shopkeeper.

Additional municipal commissioner Raghvendra Vikram Singh said, “The Kanpur Municipal Corporation has received several complaints about re-encroachments.

In the drive to be launched from March 31 all prominent markets and commercial establishments will be targeted”.
