The main fight here is between the CPI(M) led LDF, Congress led UDF and BJP.
Suresh Kurup of the CPI(M) will be up against newcomer Anto Antony of the Congress and BJP's B Radhakrishna Menon. The lone woman contestant is Mini K Philip of the Socialist Unity Centre of India.
This will be the sixth time that Kurup is contesting the polls. He won in 1984 when the CPI(M) was trounced in other parts of Kerala, defeating sitting MP Skaria Thomas of the Kerala Congress. But Ramesh Chennithala proved to be his nemesis in the 1989, 1991 and 1996 polls.
Kurup won in 1998 and 1999, def all india general secretary. He is now a member of the CPI-M district secretariat, CITU district committee and a trade union activist in more than half a dozen organisations.
