LUCKNOW
Prime Minister Vajpayee'S in the Lok Sabha for more than a decade, Lucknow will once again be the cynosure of all eyes this time.
Being the seat of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in the Lok Sabha for more than a decade, Lucknow will once again be the cynosure of all eyes this time.
Although it's been a Vajpayee stronghold for years but the constituency had rejected his efforts to enter Parliament in 1957 and 1962.
In 1971 Shiela Kaul was returned from here on the Congress ticket and promptly lost the 1977 election to Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna of the BLD. Kaul won back the seat for the Congress in the next two elections, and in 1989 the seat went to the Janata Dal.
Vajpayee was first elected from here in 1991, winning 50.9% of the vote; in 1996 he had increased his tally to 52.25%. The last time round he defeated the Samajwadi Party's Raj Babbar by 118,000 votes.
Atal drubbed Raj Babbar by a huge margin of 11,8,671 votes in 1998, polling 39,4,865 votes.
