Filmmakers believe strongly in their lucky mascots and trust them to work wonders at the BO, writes Princy Jain.

Ever wondered what’s with the blink-and-you-miss-me appearance by Kajol in Karan Johar’s last release Kal Ho Na Ho? Even Rani Mukerji did a cameo in Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham and KHNH. Of course, friendship has a lot to do with such guest appearances.

But actually, Karan considers Kajol and Rani his lucky mascots. While Kajol honoured Karan’s sentiments despite being pregnant during the making of KHNH, she is going to do it once again in Karan’s new film, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna.

She will be seen shaking a leg with the entire jig-bang — Amitabh & Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Arjun Rampal and John Abraham, in Rock-n-Roll Soniye.

Karan is not the only one with firm faith in lucky charms. Producer Sajid Nadiadwala who teamed with Salman Khan for the first time in 1996 for Jeet, says the actor is his lucky mascot.

“Salman is almost like a younger brother to me. He is my lucky charm. I would never think of making a movie without him,” he says. Indeed, Sajid has also been quoted saying that it’s the initials SK that work for him. The forthcoming films from the Nadiadwala banner prove it all. The banner has recently invested Rs 1 billon in three new directors — Shirish Kun der (Jan-e-Man), Sajid Khan (Hey Baby) and Sabir Khan (untitled film), all SKs.

For Farah Khan Kunder, Shah Rukh Khan is her lucky charm. Says the choreographer turned-director: “Making a movie without SRK being part of it is never a possibility for me.” And for King Khan, it’s an unlikely name — Suniel Shetty. After the stupendous success of Main Hoon Naa, SRK left no stone unturned to rope him for Paheli.

Soap queen Ekta Kapoor has a similar sentiment for actress Natasha, who has figured in four out of six films made by Ekta so far. Ekta’s ‘K’ fixation and the mandatory Ganeshaya namah clap before every shoot is well known.

Subhash Ghai is known to make a peek-a-boo appearance with his lucky hat in every film that he makes. Similarly, Barjatyas of Rajshree Productions believe in the presence of an animal in their films. It’s all for the big bucks, baby!
