She said the Congress party’s “publicity stunt” in Bundelkhand was aimed at diverting people’s attention from its recent drubbing in five byelections, reports M Hasan.

In the wake of the frequent forays by Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi to Bundelkhand, UP Chief Minister Mayawati has threatened to withdraw support to the Congress-led UPA government within the next three months.

Mayawati said that if prices continue to soar and the Centre fails to sanction an additional Rs 80,000 crore for the development of the Bundelkhand and Poorvanchal regions of the state, the BSP would “withdraw support within the next two to three months”.

Addressing newspersons in Lucknow on Saturday, Mayawati said, “Yuvaraj (Rahul) should stop the natak (drama) in Bundelkhand and play a positive role in solving the problems of the state.”

She said the Congress party’s “publicity stunt” in Bundelkhand was aimed at diverting people’s attention from its recent drubbing in five byelections.

“Since the elephant (BSP’s symbol) has crushed every party, the entire Opposition has launched a false propaganda against the government,” the CM said.

During the past week, Rahul visited several villages in Chitrakoot, Mahoba and Jhansi for spot verification of development under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS).

While picking holes in NREGS implementation, Rahul resorted to a dharna outside the office of the Jhansi divisional commissioner on Friday along with a large number of villagers.

“The Congress yuvraj should deploy his power, energy and intellect for controlling the massive price rise in the country,” Mayawati counselled, and added, “He should also help UP get a Rs 80,000 crore special package for the development of Bundelkhand and Poorvanchal.”

Mayawati said Rahul should rise above party politics to assist the state he represents in the Lok Sabha.

Controlling inflation was more important than the “natak” in Bundelkhand, she said.

Mayawati claimed she had inherited the bad fiscal conditions from her predecessor in May 2007 and since then, efforts were being made to improve the situation.

She also threatened to launch a countrywide agitation against the Congress after withdrawing support.
