Mayor can keep cow, calf
After a flood of criticism for keeping a pet cow and its calf in her bungalow without permission, Mayor Shubha Raul can rest easy, reports Sayli Udas Mankikar.
Kapila and Gopi can stay with the mayor. After a flood of criticism for keeping a pet cow and its calf in her bungalow without permission, Mayor Shubha Raul can rest easy.
The BMC health department has decided to allow her to keep the cow considering it to be a special case, that too without applying for a licence.
“There is no provision in law where anyone can hold a licence for keeping a cow in their homes within the city limits,” said Jairaj Thanekar, chief health officer of the civic body.
“However, just like we make a special exception for people sitting with cows near temples, we will consider her case too.” He rubbished off any rumours of her applying for a licence for keeping a cow since it did not fall within any law of state.
“After all it is not causing harm or nuisance to anyone and we will leave it alone and not take it away,” Thanekar added.
Raul, a cow lover, has given shelter to a cow and calf at her residence at Shivaji Park. The cow, which the mayor has named Kapila, was pregnant when it was being taken to the slaughter house at Virar. The cowshed owners saved the cow and gifted it to the mayor. Raul also took its calf, Gopi, in her house.
