Believe it or not. At least 195 pregnant women in the district were sterilised at various government hospitals during the last five years.
This came to the fore after the district-level quality assurance committee of the health department recently rejected the claims of these women for compensation in Sehore, about 40km from Bhopal.
As per the norms, Rs 30,000 is given to the person in case family planning procedures fail. These 195 women sought compensation from the committee on the ground that they had given birth to child even after undergoing family planning operations.
Sources said the panel rejected their claims after documents scrutiny which proved that these women were already pregnant when they underwent the sterilisation procedure.
The committee even held the doctors concerned responsible for performing sterilisation without following the procedure.
Sehore chief medical and health officer RK Gupta admitted negligence on part of the doctors and said that an inquiry would be conducted into the matter and action initiated against the guilty.
Sources said there could be a money angle too. As per the rules, a woman gets Rs 600 as incentive for sterilisation and the motivator Rs 150. A male volunteer, however, gets Rs 1,100, the motivator Rs 200 and the doctor Rs 100 per operation.
