Cool with pre-marital sex but not multiple partners. That is the profile of the typical Mumbai college student, according to an HT C-Fore survey.
Sixty-six per cent of 221 collegians surveyed said pre-marital sex was fine with the boys (77 per cent) more open to it.
Sociologist Gita Chadha said it wasn’t surprising. “A study by Tata Institute of Social Sciences in the ’90s showed the gender difference. Girls have a more traditional attitude, boys are more liberal,” she said. “It is a prestige issue for boys. They boast about how many girls they’ve slept with,” said Payal Kamath (21).
Fifty-three per cent said it was not okay to have multiple partners at the same time. Sexologist Dr Prakash Kothari said the youth were not monogamous but mono-erotic — faithful to one partner at a time.
Methodology
Research organisation C-fore conducted the survey among statistically selected sample of 221 collegians between Feb 20-22. To ensure anonymity, a secret ballot was used. Forty-nine per cent females represented the sample.
