The 'Freedom Struggle' gallery at the Museum speaks volumes about this remarkable change which would soon be witnessed in almost every nook and corner of this building of historical significance. With specific developments taking place each day in this gallery, it would be thrown open for the public in the coming month of June.

Dr Sunil Gupta, assistant keeper and incharge for the development of the gallery, is very keen to make the display attractive for kids and youngsters alike.
The walls of the gallery would be adorned with almost 250 photographs and original items associated with the freedom struggle period would be put up for display.

"The idea is to divide the entire space into specific sections which will deal with the period from 1857 to 1947.

Special write-ups will be put up explaining every stage of struggle. There are pictures of civil disobedience movement, partition of Bengal, Swadeshi movement, Jallianwala Bagh massacre, Chauri Chaura incident, Simon Commission's boycott and several other incidents throwing light on the historical struggle", said Dr Gupta.

There are also the photographs of Bahadur Shah Zafar, Zeenat Mahal, Tantia Tope, AO Hume, Sir Sayyed Ahmed Khan etc. "We have selected ten photographs which will be enlarged and they are mostly action photographs.

Besides being rare the photographs such as the one of Frontier Gandhi and Mahatma Gandhi climbing up a hill, Mahatma Gandhi in Noakhali and more such frames inculcate the feeling of nationalism and  a spirit of adventure.

Few of them will be mounted at the entrance of the gallery", he added.

The work related to wood panelling has almost been completed and most of the windows in the gallery have been utilised subtly to make way for the recessed show cases.

These show cases will be used to display the objects. "They include pocket watch of Mahatma Gandhi, register of Swaraj Party, original manuscripts of JL Nehru's writings and  letters relating to struggle for freedom", said Dr Gupta.

Dr Gupta confirmed that the entire concept would be exciting and the gallery would manage to create some enthusiasm among children.

"Although the gallery will be opened for the visitors in June but it will not be the final presentation. In fact step by step the developmental work will continue in order to raise the gallery to international standards", he said.
