The police on Saturday detained four relatives of Abdul Rauf Daud Merchant (37), convicted for killing music baron Gulshan Kumar, following his alleged escape during furlough — temporary release while serving sentence.
Merchant, who killed Kumar on August 12, 1997, at Juhu, was lodged at Aurangabad Central Prison after he was convicted for life on April 29, 2002.
On March 2, the Bombay High Court had granted him a 15-day furlough from April 15.
After his release, Merchant reported at the Mumbra police station from April 17. On April 26, he told the police he was going to Aurangabad to get his furlough extended.
Merchant’s brothers Rashid — a suspect in the case he was acquitted — and Imtiaz, mother Fatima and Rashid’s wife Shaheen were detained. Shaheen had signed the surety bond for Merchant’s release.
“They claim to have no clue,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Subhash Sanghai. Merchant’s younger sister Shahnaaz (30) told Hindustan Times that he had not contacted them since he left for Aurangabad.
Merchant’s disappearance was brought to notice of Thane police on May 15.
His last call to the family was on April 27 to inform that he had reached Aurangabad, police said.
