‘Namo’ acronym for ‘no action, maximum oratory': Rahul Gandhi
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday came down heavily on Narendra Modi government, which is celebrating its first anniversary, saying the government created many records in introducing anti-people polices and the celebration is only for a few corporate houses.
Looking to take the fizz out of the Modi government's anniversary celebrations, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said the PM was a fashion icon whose media hype and marketing won't help for long. The government had set records in introducing anti-people policies in its first year and the only group happy was a few corporate houses, he said.
“No prime minister in the country had ever donned a suit worth Rs 10 lakh. He’s fast becoming a fashion icon ignoring the common man,” Gandhi said, adding the BJP’s slogan ‘Namo’ was a synonym for ‘no action, maximum oratory”. He went on to explain why the Modi government was a ‘suit, boot ki sarkar’.
The youth and the farmers must expose Modi as someone who only believed in slogans, oratory and fine dressing, Gandhi told Youth Congress workers at a large rally in this north Kerala city, adding the Congress would not let the contentious land bill get passed in the Rajya Sabha.
“Hailstorms and unseasonal rain hit farmers badly. Instead of giving succour to them, he’s out to grab their land in the name of creating jobs. Only 8% jobs are blocked due to scarcity of land,” Gandhi said, adding the tearing hurry with which the government wanted to change the land law had raised suspicion. “He loves to tour foreign countries but has never visited the house of a deceased farmer.”
This is the fifth in a series of visits to states since Gandhi’s return from a 57-day sabbatical, after those to Uttarakhand, Punjab, Maharashtra and Telangana, aimed at enhancing his pan-Indian appeal.
On Wednesday, he is scheduled to visit a fishing hamlet at Chavakkad in Thrissur district. “It's sad that after farmers they are out to target fishermen. We will not allow this,” Gandhi said, referring to the Meena Kumar report that has proposed restrictions on deep-sea fishing. He is likely to announce an all-India action plan against the implementation of the report.
Kerala chief minister Oomen Chandy, former Union ministers AK Antony and Vayalar Ravi also attended Tuesday's meet.
