"Nanoscience and nanotechnology (N&N) could encompass almost all of chemistry as well as molecular physics and molecular biology with an emphasis on precise structures and function at nanoscale dimensions," Kroto said at a lecture here at the Amity Campus.

Kroto was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1996 for his pioneering work in the field of nanoscience.

As such it also included much of modern materials science, in particular where the advances in properties involved an intrinsic atomic perspective, he said.

The chemists for many years were trying to build larger and larger molecules and are now beginning to create large molecules with specific intrinsic functions,  Kroto added.
