The Australian-born Oscar winner has signed on to star in and produce a new cloak-and-dagger thriller that is being hailed as a female version of The Bourne Identity, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The top-secret spy adventure is to be written by Simon Kinberg for Regency Enterprises and 20th Century Fox, but no details of the plot are being released, the industry publication reported.
Regency and Fox were the production powerhouses behind last year's spy mega-hit Mr and Mrs Smith, that ingnited the celebrated affair between its stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.
Kidman, the former Mrs Tom Cruise, had initially been slated to take the female lead role in Smith, but pulled out due to a scheduling conflict.
The 38-year-old Kidman won the best actress Oscar in 2003 for playing British author Virginia Woolf in The Hours and has also starred in such films as the 2001 musical Moulin Rouge,To Die For, Dead Calm,The Stepford Wives and last year's Bewitched.
