Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam on Saturday appealed to the north Indian community in Nasik not to leave Maharashtra and assured them of safety in the state.
Nirupam also met the family of Hindustan Aeronautical Limited employee Ambadas Dharrao who was killed in stone pelting incident, which took place in Nashik on Wednesday.
He visited the Jindal Polyfilms plant where a 42-year-old security guard Vinod Singh was killed in clashes allegedly Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) activists.
Nirupam also criticised Raj Thackeray saying the MNS chief had issued a statement after Dharrao's death seeking forgiveness but had not done so in the case of Singh.
"The common man should not be affected by such violence," Nirupam told PTI over telephone.
Common people like taxi drivers and hawkers were also affected by the violence which should not have taken place, he said.
Incidents of violence were witnessed in parts of the state on Wednesday after the arrest of MNS chief Raj Thackeray in Mumbai for promoting enmity between communities by making speeches against the north Indian community.
