A sessions court at Ramanagaram, 40 km from Bangalore, extended the custody on a plea by Criminal Investigation Department, seeking more time as Nityananda's questioning had to be halted after he was hospitalised for a day.

The controversial swami was produced before Judge Hungund amidst tight security.

CID sources said Nityananda's former Chennai-based disciple Lenin Karuppanan who blew the lid off the alleged sex scandal by making the video clippings of his sleaze activities with an actress public, was summoned for questioning on April 25 and 26.

"We have seized some documents and a memory card from him, which need to analysed," the sources told PTI.

The CID has not been able to make much headway in extracting information from Nityananda as either he goes into 'dhyana' (meditation) mode when he is about to be questioned or feigns some illness or the other.

"He seems to be a hard nut to crack," police said.

Meanwhile, Nityananda moved the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail in three cheating cases registered against him in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

According to his petition, a man named Aladi Mahendran and few others, who claimed themselves as advocates practising in Puducherry had submitted a "false" complaint at Orleanpet Police Station in the union territory alleging that he had cheated public in the guise of a sanyasi and amassed huge properties and insulted religious feelings of Hindus.

Similar cases were also registered by Angayarkani, an advocate and T M Viswanathan, a freelance reporter, with Chennai police commissioner and Coimbatore police commissioner respectively, the petition said.

Nityananda, who remained elusive for over a month after the alleged sex scandal came out into the open, was arrested along with his aide Nitya Bhaktananda in a joint operation by Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh Police from Solan district in Himachal Pradesh on April 21.
