Tamil Nadu Assembly on Thursday witnessed noisy scenes for a short while when the DMK and Congress members charged the previous Jayalalithaa government with attempts to privatise the nationlised transport in the state.
When Transport Minister KN Nehru made the remark, AIADMK members vehmently protested it. Nehru quoted the Governor's Address of 2002 in support of his arguement, when the then governor P S Rammohan Rao announced the government had decided to privatise identified routes in a bid to create a healthy competion between the private and government bus operators.
KA Sangotayyan, AIADMK Whip, said the then party government never contemplated privatisation. Many AIADMK members were on their feet protesting against Nehru's remarks.
Chief Minister M Karunanidhi intervened to say that it was the DMK Government in 1968 nationlised the private transport. He wanted the members to avoid controversial remarks so that the time of the House was not wasted.
Again, P Sundaram (Congress) charged the AIADMK Government with attempts of privatisaion, which was resented by the AIADMK MLAs.
Nehru then intervened to say that the previous government did not purchase new buses for the transport corporations with an aim of privatising the nationlised transport system.
