A woman in Bihar ended her life after not being allowed by her husband to vote for the candidate of her choice, Railway Minister Nitish Kumar, sources say.
They said the young woman from Haiderpur village, which falls under the Nalanda Lok Sabha constituency, committed suicide on Tuesday afternoon after a heated exchange with her husband at the polling booth over who to vote for.
Apparently she wanted to vote for Kumar, the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) candidate.
But her husband pressured her to press the electronic voting machine button for "Mahal", the symbol of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), instead of arrow, the symbol of the JD-U.
"She left the polling booth frustrated and went home and consumed poison," a source said.
Her husband was a hardcore supporter of Bihar's ruling Rashtriya Janata Dal, which is supporting LJP candidate Ram Vilas Paswan.
The incident has sent shockwaves in nearby villages.
Kumar, who has been widely projected as the 'Vikash Purush', or 'development man' by leaders of the National Democratic Alliance, is in the fray from Nalanda.
Kumar is also in fray from the neighbouring Barh Lok Sabha seat.
