In a first-of-its-kind move to address the misconduct of police personnel, a single-member State Police Complaint Authority on Friday heard the grievances of the public. The committee was chaired by HS Rana, a retired IAS officer.
Now, residents of the city can complaint against any police personnel — from constable to the level of Director General of Police (DGP) — for serious misconduct.
“Gurgaon is the second district after Faridabad where the authority has visited for creating awareness,” said Rana.
He explained that the authority can enquire into allegations of “serious misconduct” — any act of omission by a cop that leads to death, rape or attempt to rape and grievous hurt in police custody.
He said if the authority is satisfied prima-facie about the genuineness of the complaint, the authority will conduct an enquiry after which its recommendation will be sent to the state government. “No anonymous complaint will be entertained,” Rana said.
Besides, people would be able to lodge online complaints on the authority’s website that would come up by the end of March.
However, one would have to submit a hard copy of the complaint along with supporting documents such as statements of witnesses after an online complaint.
