Paes' name to be in record books with Navratilova
Leander Paes was 'excited and happy' for being a part of Martina Navratilova's epoch-making victory in the Wimbledon mixed doubles final.
Indian tennis star Leander Paes was 'excited and happy' for being a part of Martina Navratilova's epoch-making victory in the Wimbledon mixed doubles final, which took the 46 year old tennis legend's number of titles in the grand slam event to 20, the same as record holder Billie Jean King.
"Obviously, Leander was very excited and happy. Fans outside India may after sometime forget who Martina's partner was in the final, but my son's name will now forever be there in the record books", a proud father Vece Paes told PTI here today.
The senior Paes, who spoke to Leander after the final, said Wimbledon always had a special place for his son, who won its junior title in 1990.
The fifth seeded Paes and Navratilova won in straight sets against Andy Ram of Israel and Anastassia Rodionova of Russia in yesterday's final.
Navratilova now has nine singles, seven women's doubles and four mixed doubles titles at Wimbledon.
Leander and Navratilova, who have been teaming up at the Grand Slams of late, had earlier this year also won the mixed doubles crown at the Australian Open.
"This partnership has been very fruitful. They seem to fire up each other - Leander, with his youthfuless and agressiveness, and Martina, with her amazing amount of fitness, artistry and motivation even at this advanced age," he said.
