PMK, a constituent of UPA, strongly backs the nuclear deal and vows to contest the next Lok Sabha polls under a Sonia Gandhi-led alliance.

After Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK snapped ties with it, PMK, a constituent of UPA, on Friday warmed up to Congress strongly backing the India-US nuclear deal and vowing to contest the next Lok Sabha polls under a Sonia Gandhi-led alliance.

A resolution adopted by the general council of the party extended unconditional support for the nuclear deal and said the UPA government has embarked on an effort to evolve a consensus on the issue with Left parties which are opposed to the agreement.

About the party's ties with UPA, PMK founder S Ramadoss told reporters after the meeting that "there is no question of PMK leaving UPA. We will continue in the alliance led by Congress President Sonia Gandhi. There is no change in our stand."

Referring to DMK's snapping ties with the party, he said PMK would play the role of a responsible and constructive opposition in the state, taking up people's issues.

On Chief Minister M Karunanidhi's reported comment that he would review DMK's decision if PMK regretted 'vituperative attack' against DMK leadership by its senior leader J Guru and took action against him, Ramadoss said he would react only after hearing from Viduthalai Chiruthaigal leader Tol Tirumavalavan to whom Karunanidhi made these remarks.

But there seems to be no attempt by PMK for any rapprochement with DMK as the political resolution passed at the general council ruled out any apology for Guru's remarks.

The resolution said DMK had decided to snap its ties with PMK on some "extraneous considerations" and based on some "motives".
