Two accomplices of the slain criminal managed to flee the scene.
Police recovered a .9mm pistol and a motorcycle from the scene. The deceased criminal has been identified as 32-year-old, Rinku Rai. He was carrying a reward of Rs 5,000 on his head and was a resident of Jalalpur area of Jaunpur district.
He was wanted in several cases of heinous crime including murders in Lucknow, Jaunpur and Varanasi districts. In the recent past, he had killed a youth, Sandeep Chaurasia in Phoolpur area of Varanasi. He was wanted in more than a dozen cases of loot.
According to the police, he was also working for a local jailed mafiadon, Subhash Thakhur. Station Officer of Ramnagar had got a tip off that some contract killers were coming to Sujabad area for killing someone.
Acting on a tip off, the police laid a trap in the area and started waiting for the suspected criminals.
Meanwhile, at around 12 pm, cops spotted three youths, riding on a motorcycle, when they signalled them to stop, one of them opened fire on the police team and fled towards the Malviya Bridge. Cops sounded a wireless message amongst cops of the city and started chasing them.
Following the cops coming from the city side on the road, the criminals fled towards the way leading to the Ganga through an academic institution, but cops, in retaliation, also opened fire on them. The pillion rider received bullet injury and slumped to the floor.
While, the other two criminals sensing danger, got off from the bike and fled the scene taking advantage of darkness. Cops established the identity of the deceased as Rinku.
