Police, separatists clash in Srinagar

The clashes happened during a general strike called by Hurriyat hardliners against alleged maltreatment of Kashmiri prisoners.

Separatist activists on Saturday clashed with police in Nowhatta and adjoining areas of the city during a general strike called by Hurriyat hardliners against alleged maltreatment of Kashmiri prisoners.

Police used tear gas on activists when several of them got agitated and pelted them with stones in Nowhatta area in the afternoon, officials said.

They said no one was hurt in the clashes which lasted for about an hour.

Hurriyat hardline leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani had called for a general strike in the valley alleging that Kashmiri detainees in various jails in Jammu and Kashmir and outside the state.

Kashmir High Court Bar Association and some separatist and militant outfits supported the call.
