'Praise makes you reach the saturation point'

The new entrant Imran Khan happy with his film’s success speaks to Minakshi Saini about the love, films and more.

Not bad,” is not a compliment many of us cherish, but hot new actor Imran Khan does just that. Because the ‘Not bad’ was his mamujaan Aamir Khan’s reaction to his work in Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na. “I took it as a compliment,”says Imran.

“Believe me, from Aamir those are words of extreme praise.” It’s a family trait, he reveals. “We are all very critical of our work. Praise is used very sparingly in our family.” And that works for him just fine. “Praise makes you reach the saturation point too soon. Criticism is much more helpful because it highlights your flaws and helps you get rid of them. Praise is a dead end.”

But the audience has been heaping the good words on him. That he doesn’t mind though he finds it “overwhelming. We always thought that people would like our work, but so much, so soon, was unexpected.” Saying so many nice things about himself doesn’t sit well with Imran because he quickly starts to point out his flaws onscreen.

“I’m not a very good dancer, it does not come naturally to me. There’s also a certain flamboyance, an ease, charm... that is often required from an actor and that also doesn’t come easily to me.” Does that mean that Pappu can’t dancesaala was actually about him?

“It could be, but you have to ask Abbas to get more details on it,” he jokes. Now that controversial topics have been slipped in, it’s time to move in for the kill — how come the film’s release date clashed with that of Love Story 2050?

“We didn’t know that any other film was releasing on that date when we decided July 4 was a good date for my debut release. We didn’t sit and think about competing with any film,” he clarifies. “Personally, I don’t feel it makes a difference if someone else is being launched on the same date. It’s the content of your film that will fetch you audiences — if it’s good people will watch it no matter how many releases there are at the box office. Love Story 2050 is five time’s bigger than Jaane tu... It’s a big event in the Indian film industry.”

Jaane tu... is already becoming a thing of the past for Imran. His next movie Kidnap releases in October and he has started another film Luck. In both films, Imran will portray a cool, muscular dude. On the personal front, he’s been in a six-year-long relationship with Avantika.

And unlike his uncle, he acknowledged her before the film’s release. “I feel that if someone is an important part of your life — as Avantika is in mine — then to deny her existence is an insult.” But that doesn’t mean he’s tying the knot anytime soon. “We haven’t really thought about it,” he says. “This is the time for me to focus on my career.”
