The daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughter of former prime ministers, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra gave her children Rehan and Miraya a taste of electioneering in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.
But the Congress’ star campaigner in Rae Bareli and Amethi — the Lok Sabha seats of her mother and party president Sonia Gandhi and brother and general secretary Rahul Gandhi — scoffed at a question on whether this was the initiation of the children into politics.
“What kind of a question is this? They are kids. They are nine. How can they be initiated into politics?” she told a mediaperson. Rehan and Miraya shared the stage with their mother at two meetings in Rae Bareli’s Rasoolpur and Kariyha Bazaar, where she accused the ruling BSP of wasting money on statues and parks instead of development.
On stage, the children saw garlands appear around their neck too. Finding their mother run an adoring hand on their heads, they stood through her speeches urging voters to bring in Congress and change to UP.
Leaving the stage, Rehan and Miraya waved at the crowd with their mother and the crowd responded. They kept on waving to people from the backseat of the car, mother firmly on poll trail from the front.
After the two rallies, the children stayed put in the car. But their presence revived among Congress supporters memories of a young Rahul and Priyanka accompanying their father Rajiv Gandhi during his visits.
