Farooq was quoted by a newspaper saying "Kashmiris were maha chor as they were involved in pilferage of electricity". The comment led to pandemonium in the assembly on Monday.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) workers assembled at their party head office and marched towards the Lal Chowk holding placards, and burnt Farooq's effigy at the Regal Chowk here, demanding an apology from him, on Tuesday.

Later in the day a similar protest march was taken out by the newly appointed Aam Aadmi Party candidate Raja Muzaffarar Bhat.

Addressing his supporters, Bhat demanded an immediate withdrawal of the comment.

Farooq had, however, clarified that he never used the term "maha chor" for the Kashmiris.

"A section of media misquoted me," Farooq clarified.
