HEAVY RAIN may prove to be a bane for people living in urban areas, but for rural people, the showers prove to be those of blessings.
According to residents of Motipur, Alaupur, Sheikhpur and 17 other villages situated in Jajmau area, the rain is boon for them.
They expressed disappointment that scanty rains had affected the transfer of the paddy to the fields.
But week-long rain has brightened prospects of a good paddy crop. Paddy growers have begun transferring the paddy plants to the fields and now they are praying for good rains for a few days more.
The only source of their livelihood is farming. But they do not have facilities water for irrigation and are totally dependant on the rain. In the absence of good rain last year, the residents of these villages faced a starvation-like situation.
A little amount of water they get for irrigation is highly contaminated and totally unfit for irrigation purposes.
Ram Kumar a farmer in the area said, “We get untreated sewer water mixed with dangerous tannery effluents, which if used, damages the crop. In some areas, though the plants grow but they do not bear fruit due to the contaminated water.”
Rajvardhan another growers said, “I was a prominent vegetable crop-grower. But for want of uncontaminated water for irrigation, the vegetables were destroyed during two seasons. This caused me heavy losses.
Consequently, I have left growing vegetables. My fields have turned into barren lands. There is no one to buy them. I want to move out from here to some other place, once my fields are sold.
Heavy rains this year could have helped me but I did not grow the vegetable crop this time due to uncertainty of rainfall,” Rajvardhan added.
