Why did RJD chief Lalu Prasad, who till late Friday tried to mollify his former aide, Ram Kripal Yadav — even by sending daughter Misa Bharti as an emissary — suddenly turn 180 degrees?

After the 'emotional atyachar', came the rebuff.

Why did RJD chief Lalu Prasad, who till late Friday tried to mollify his former aide, Ram Kripal Yadav — even by sending daughter Misa Bharti as an emissary — suddenly turn 180 degrees?

He refused to field Yadav from the Pataliputra constituency instead of Misa, saying, “Horses cannot be changed mid-stream”.

The story further unfolded on Saturday, with former deputy chief minister and BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi said Yadav had been in contact with several BJP leaders.

At an election rally in Buxar on Saturday, Prasad came out openly against Yadav, saying his party would not tolerate gaddars (turncoats) ever. “Their leaving the party would have no impact.”

“When the party members had authorised me to finalise the selection of candidates for 27 seats, I did what I thought was right,” he said, referring to the controversy over Yadav’s rebellion over the selection of Misa for the Pataliputra seat.

He said, “In this world, there is no end to pandubbas (close people) who are always trying to pull me down.”

While Modi did not clarify whether Yadav would be given a BJP ticket, it is widely expected that he is a strong candidate for Pataliputra.

There were speculations that he could even opt for Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal(U).

But JD(U) leaders ruled it out, saying the party has a sitting MP in Ranjan Prasad Yadav, who would be nominated again.

Also, Ram Kripal does not share good relations with senior JD(U) leader Shyam Rajak, who was once in the RJD and were together known as Lalu Prasad’s Ram and Shyam.

But the BJP, which has been looking for a strong candidate for the Pataliputra seat, may go for Yadav, as he has been known to be popular in that constituency.
Meanwhile, former JD(U) leader Nawal Kishore Yadav, who joined the BJP, is also an aspirant for the Pataliputra seat. He had reportedly followed Kripal to Delhi, after it was rumoured that the latter had left to meet BJP leaders, following the tiff with his own party boss.

In 2009, Lalu Prasad replaced Ram Kripal in the Pataliputra constituency, but lost the seat to his erstwhile confidant Ranjan Prasad Yadav of the JD(U) by 10,000 votes.
