‘GATHA EK Lambe Samay Ki’, a documentary vividly entailing the journey of Rangshri Little Ballet Troupe marked the beginning of a three-day festival organised by the troupe at its auditorium, Shanti Marg, on Saturday.
Rangshri has organised the festival to celebrate the glorious 150 years of the mutiny of 1857 and the 55th anniversary of the troupe. The documentary has been produced by Bhopal Doordarshan has been directed by Nilesh Raghuvanshi.
The half an hour documentary gives a lucid account of the journey of the troupe and also a peek into the art of ballet, which was made popular by troupe’s founder Shantivardhan.
The late Shantivardhan who founded the troupe with a meagre Rs 168 in Bombay and four people dreamt of making ballet a popular art and also a mystical image to the troupe.
Back in 1947 when Shantivardhan presented its first ballet on ‘Discovery of India’ written by Jawaharlal Nehru, Nehru himself had complemented him for the documentary saying it was even better than the book. Gulbardhan, a co-founder and the general secretary of the troupe who, though looking frail, was also present on the occasion and is running the show well with just 30 people with her.
Ram Prakash Tripathi, an associate of the troupe, said, “Ballet leaves the audience spellbound and has an enigmatic strain to it but the expenses are huge are difficult to manage.
Prabhat Ganguly, a choreographer at the troupe, said that ballet is teamwork and gave credit to Gulbardhan for sustaining the group after the demise of Shantivardhan on September 3, 1954.
The group has performed in France, Belgium, United Kingdom, Nepal and many other places and has to its credit various ballets, ‘Shudhit Pashan’, ‘Bhairavi’, ‘Pashutantra’ and many others. The latest ballet the team has been working on is, ‘Singhasan Battisi’ and striving to bring more of them, said Ram Prakash Tripathi.
On Sunday will be presented a play ‘Tatya Mama’ directed by Bansi Kaul and day another ballet, ‘Swatantrata Sangram’ by Rangshri will conclude the festival on January 22. The timing will be 6 pm on both the days.
