A CONVICT confined to the Model Jail, Santu Ram, filed his bail petition seven times but every time it was rejected by the Court. Meanwhile, he was deputed to the ?Gaushala? (dairy) started at the Model Jail last year and eight months later, his bail petition was accepted by the court. Santu threw a party for all convicts saying it was the reward of ?gau-seva? (service to the sacred cow) that he was bailed out.

This got convicts working in the jail’s gaushala making a beeline for the job. As a result, management of the gaushala that was being taken care of by eight convicts initially, has now 20 of them working there in good faith that gau-seva would bail them out too.

Senior superintendent of Model Jail Suresh Chandra said, many convicts had put in their request to be deputed to the gaushala and that it was being decided on the basis of seniority and interest.

Model Jail is a place where convicts are kept with the aim of reforming them. The gaushala seems to be working in exactly that direction.

The gaushala was formed on the premises in February 2005 with five cows through a cooperative society loan of Rs 1,80,000. Today, there are 27 cows in the dairy and over the year, more than 85,000 litres milk has been produced and Gaushala earned Rs 11.72 lakh in a year by selling the milk.

After deducting the expenditure, loan return to cooperative society, convicts’ salary, 15 per cent maintenance to government, the gaushala earned a net profit of Rs 5.94 lakh this year. They are planning to buy more cows with the profit.

Chandra said convicts working in the jail dairy were in any case earning more than other convicts engaged in any other trade in the Model Jail.

The gaushala is giving them triple benefit—of higher earning, greater compensation to the family of the victims of the convict and spiritual cleansing of the inmates.
