THE RELATIONSHIP between ruling allies — the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) — has reached its nadir. The RLD has made it clear that the pact with the SP was just for the government formation.
While the RLD’s message from Chitrakoot where the party organised a two-day workers’ conference on July 26-27 was loud and clear against the State Government, a senior SP leader asked if the RLD wanted to oppose the government, why was it in the ministry at all?
The SP leader said that the RLD had been opposing the government being a part of it. He said that the SP would take up the issue with RLD chief Chaudhury Ajit Singh.
However, after getting adverse feedback from all over the State about tie-up with the SP, Ajit Singh is under pressure to break the ties. RLD general secretary Anil Dubey told HT that the pact with the SP was just for government formation after the fall of Mayawati government in 2003. He said that the RLD was free to chalk out its electoral strategy. The party has planned to contest at least 200 seats in the assembly election. The SP, which had surrendered 10 Lok Sabha seats to the RLD in 2004 elections, could ill-afford to give 200 seats in assembly poll. Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav had recently asserted that he was ready to pay any price to keep the pact with RLD intact. However, the SP leader refused to comment on the number of seats on which the RLD had planned to contest.
At Chiktrakoot conclave, Ajit Singh launched frontal attack on the State Government for fast deteriorating law and order situation and the ruling party goons roaming around and terrorising the officers. The party has also assailed the State Government policy of large-scale acquisition of farmers’ land for big business houses.
In this connection, the RLD will hold state-wide demonstration in August.
The Chief Minister again indirectly targeted the RLD for its demand of Harit Pradesh. Yadav said that small states had no future and those who did not have anything to offer to the people, had been talking about further division of the State and emotionally exploiting the people.
