?Sacrifice? will doom Cong: BJP

SONIA GANDHI?S resignation evoked a mixed response in political circles here on Thursday. The Congress dubbed it a great sacrifice, while the BJP said it would prove disastrous for the Congress, which always depended on the Nehru-Gandhi surname. However, no BSP leader was ready to say anything on the issue, as Mayawati had not given her consent for them to react.

BJP leader Lalji Tandon said the debate on the controversy over office of profit, which started in Lucknow, had ended in Delhi with Sonia Gandhi’s resignation. He termed it as political drama, as none of the Congress allies at the Centre was in favour of an ordinance to protect Sonia. He denied that the BJP would go to court against the Bill passed by the UP Assembly on the issue, but expressed the confidence that someone would file a PIL to seek court’s intervention.

State Congress president Salman Khurshid said Sonia Gandhi’s decision to resign was yet another example of her commitment to clean politics. Another Congress leader Dr Sanjay Singh observed that she had upheld the highest traditions of the Nehru-Gandhi family.

State Samajwadi Party president Ram saran Das refused to comment, saying it was an internal matter of the Congress and did not deserve any comment.

Hurt by Sonia’s resignation, the Lucknow unit of the Youth Congress burnt effigies of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav in front of Vidhan Bhawan on Thursday evening. City Youth Congress president Prabhujot Singh Batra ‘Lucky’ said there was no comparison between Sonia Gandhi and others, as she was ‘clean and honest’.
